I, Jelly, know how important it is to make sure the studio you patronize for Tattooing and Tattoo Removal is CLEAN and follows ALL health codes. When you come to Jelly’s Surly Skull®, LLC…you’ll have nothing to worry about! I am a former Medical Assistant and Phlebotomist. I am knowledgeable in proper Aseptic Technique (the procedure used to prevent the spread of bloodborne pathogens and other infectious diseases) to keep my clients & myself safe. I am ALSO required by the State of Texas to be OSHA certified every 2 years in Bloodborne Pathogens training and CPR/First Aid. My studio is enrolled with MedPro for the proper disposal of used tattoo needles. My equipment is completely clean and sterilized before ever used on a client. I go above and beyond to ensure that I use the BEST & SAFEST health practices for every Tattoo/Tatt2Away® session.

I am licensed through the Texas Department of State Health Services (License #1002099)

If you have questions about the Texas State Health Codes, OSHA Regulations, the proper disposal of used tattoo needles, my studio’s practices on Aseptic Technique (the standard method on the prevention of cross contamination and spread of disease), or any questions in general...just ask!

In fact, I WELCOME you to ask me!

DID YOU KNOW?

In the state of Texas, the Texas Department of State Health Services does NOT require a Tattooer and/or Tattoo Studio to prove that they have the ability to perform a clean tattoo to get a tattoo license.

All they require is a location and the licensing fee.

What does this mean?!? It means that ANYONE can own, open and operate a tattoo studio regardless of whether or not they possess the knowledge. Texas does NOT care about the work being produced by these studios. TXDSHS only cares about the sterility of our equipment (if we have expired Inks, Needles, Disposable Tubes, etc.) and if we have hot running water. Yep, that’s it. Tattoo Studios are treated like a restaurant, when I personally feel we ought to be treated as a medical facility, like a doctor’s office.

A "Scratcher" (a term used for someone who is self-taught/untrained in Tattooing while charging for producing low quality work) can own and operate a tattoo studio as long as the building they are licensing is approved!!! If the pricing of the tattoo sounds “too cheap” or “too good to be true”, you’re probably paying someone to PRACTICE on you. Scratchers depend on clients remaining ignorant in order to monetarily gain what they can from you LEGALLY…and even illegally! As soon as you sign that consent form, you’ve waived ALL rights. Just because a studio is licensed does NOT mean they are professionals!!! Do your research BEFORE letting anyone tattoo you. LOOK at portfolios and ask, ask, ASK questions! If they’re annoyed by your queries, let that be a red flag! Any TRUE professional will NOT be afraid to answer questions and/or educate their clients.

Fun fact, Jelly goes out of her way to educate her clients. Why? Because she feels that educated clients make better clients! Jelly hopes this knowledge will keep good folks from becoming victims to scratchers and/or other tattoo shop cons/scams.

The TATTOO INDUSTRY in Texas REALLY is a pirate-like industry...so don't just trust any tattoo studio! It's your body...and your health!

FINE ART GETS SKIN DEEP

A Tattoo IS the only way to take your money with you to the grave!

#QIWYP4 - Quality Is What You Pay For

Our staff is honest...to a fault! Sometimes, what we might say about a certain design can be misconstrued or misinterpreted by a client. While we do try to be as professional & polite as possible (promise we don't wish to offend!), we will tell you straight out if we believe that a design won’t work out the way you might expect. We’d rather turn away a client, or have you rethink your designs than allow you to walk out the door with something you may come to hate. We feel it's super bad karma to put a bad tattoo on somebody, or to push a client into settling on a custom design they don’t want. Our goal is to enhance our client's self-esteem...NOT RUIN IT! We want our clients to enjoy MANY years with their artistic investments!

Jelly is a true professional, and ONLY wants what is best for YOU…and she expects those working under her license to be the same! It’s your investment. Allow us to guide you and help you create YOUR design. Whether it’s a Tattoo, Tattoo Removal, Graphic Design or Fine Art…we want you to enjoy your investments for years to come! Thank You in advance for trusting us with your precious skin!

The first graphic I created for the studio in 2014. Kept it real simple since I was just starting out. So much has changed since then!

Jelly’s Surly Skull®, LLC

(formerly The Surly Skull Tattoo Studio, LLC)
Established Nov 2014 in San Angelo, Texas.

Yael "Jelly" Sanchez (Owner, Artist/Tattooer) - This half Colombian/Cuban Latina, 1ˢᵗ Generation American was born in NY…but raised in Hialeah, FL since she was 2 years old.

Jelly took a vocational course in Miami, FL for Graphic Design back in 1998-99 in order to escape her disappointment working in the medical field. She learned to work with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator & PageMaker. She worked as a Graphic Designer & Type Setter after graduating. She has since learned how to work with other types of rendering software, like Procreate® for iPad. She’s also an amateur photographer.

Jelly began her Tattoo Apprenticeship in New Orleans, LA at the ripe age of 32 at Inkbox (now closed) at 1005 Canal Street in the French Quarter, under the Tattooer Eric "Jarold" Carter. Before that, she’s worked as a Medical Assistant & Phlebotomist, as a Graphic Designer & Type Setter, and as a manager for various retail, food and hospitality industries over the years. Jelly came out of apprenticeship and earned her Tattoo Chair in June 2005. Hurricane Katrina forced her to relocate to Houston, TX on August 28, 2005...just 2 months after earning her spot. She stayed in Houston, working for Walter "Wally" Jones (R.I.P.) at Phat Kat Tats from 2006 to 2010. There, Wally helped her skills "grow up" by becoming her mentor. She eventually moved back to New Orleans, LA in 2012. She continually broadens her education as an Artist, Tattooer and Tatt2Away® Technician by attending seminars and other educational courses. She's worked for various studios between Texas & Louisiana, including a brief stay in 2012 at Jackie Gresham's Aart Accent…the longest running Tattoo Studio in New Orleans’s French Quarter. Jelly moved to San Angelo, TX from New Orleans, LA in 2013 and is now the proud Owner of Jelly’s Surly Skull®, LLC
